Charter Etiquette & Tipping: The Beginner’s Guide to Not Being ‘That Guest

A yacht charter is luxury, yes — but it’s also a small floating ecosystem with humans working hard to make it effortless. Etiquette is basically the art of not breaking the ecosystem.

Respect the crew’s workflow

  • Ask, don’t demand.
  • Give preferences early (food, schedule).
  • Don’t “micro-manage” the crew.

Privacy & spaces

Crew areas are not guest areas. The boat has invisible boundaries — honor them.

Tipping (the calm version)

Tipping standards vary by region and charter type. When in doubt:

  • ask the charter broker or captain what’s customary
  • tip as a group, in one envelope, at the end

Packing rules that save your trip

  • soft luggage only
  • deck shoes / non-marking soles
  • light layers + sun protection
